Bridging Linear and NLE: Maximizing Efficiency with D-Stream LT
Founded in February 1963, Tokyo Sound Production Co., Ltd. (TSP) is a major media production house. Tomoyuki Muroi, Chief Editor of the Video Center’s Editing Division, explains why they adopted VRi’s D-Stream LT and how it has transformed their professional workflow.
Tokyo Sound Production Co., Ltd.
- Industry: Comprehensive Media Production & Post-Production
- Founded: February 1963
System Implemented
D-Stream LT
Reasons for Adoption
The primary driver was the transition to XDCAM delivery. The traditional tape-based workflow was inefficient, requiring tedious file-to-tape and tape-to-file conversions. TSP sought a device that could digitize files during the editing process while maintaining the familiar operability of a VTR.
- VTR-like Functionality: After evaluating five to six manufacturers, D-Stream LT was selected because it supports VTR-style operations such as pre-read editing and split editing.
- Wide Codec Support: Its compatibility with various codecs, including MP4, MOV, and H.264, was a decisive factor compared to competitors.
Experience After Implementation
The implementation was smoother than expected, and operators are highly satisfied with its stable performance. While there were minor initial challenges—such as saving default settings and XML data integration—TSP has high expectations for these to be addressed in the June 2018 version update.
Impact on Efficiency and Speed
D-Stream LT has significantly accelerated the editing process.
- Eliminating Waiting Time: Time previously spent on pre-rolling, cueing, and tape-to-file conversion is now saved.
- Non-linear-like Flexibility: In tape workflows, changing the length of an opening required re-copying the entire subsequent content in real-time. D-Stream LT allows for efficient "copy and paste" handling of subsequent data, similar to NLE systems.
- Client Satisfaction: Clients have praised the improved "tempo" of the editing sessions because brought-in file materials can be used directly without delay.
Cost Benefits and Support
- Reduced Hardware Costs: One D-Stream LT unit can replace two tape decks, leading to lower equipment and maintenance costs.
- Lower Media Costs: Clients are pleased because the need for multiple source tapes is minimized.
- Responsive Support: VRi has been highly responsive to detailed feedback from the field, incorporating user requests into new software versions.
Future Outlook
TSP views D-Stream LT as a solution that dissolves the barrier between linear and NLE editing. It has resolved the dilemma of choosing between the two formats. The team is eagerly awaiting the new version featuring OL dissolve functions and an NLE-like GUI to further enhance flexibility.
