Efficiency and Innovation:
Transitioning to KarismaCG for High-Speed Telop Production
Asahi Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), founded in 1951, is a prominent Japanese broadcaster. Jun Hasegawa from the Post-Production Division of the Production Technology Center shares their journey of selecting and implementing KarismaCG.

The Challenge: Replacing a Legacy System
For many years, ABC relied on the “DEKO” system for their linear workflow. However, frequent hardware failures and the sudden discontinuation of DEKO forced the team to urgently find a replacement. Despite discussions about moving to Non-Linear Editing (NLE), the team decided to maintain a linear workflow to handle high-volume telop creation within tight deadlines without rendering delays.
The Selection: Why KarismaCG?
The primary criteria were productivity equal to or better than DEKO, combined with enhanced features and operability. After a two-month evaluation, KarismaCG proved to be the only solution that met these needs
- Superior Productivity: KarismaCG’s shortcut-based operability allowed for faster graphics creation than DEKO.
- True 3D Capabilities: Unlike systems that merely add depth to objects, KarismaCG offers real 3D elements like Z-space positioning, lighting, and particles—all editable without rendering.
- Stability and Compatibility: It offered the stability required for broadcast and the ability to import legacy DEKO files directly.
The Results: Seamless Integration
The transition was remarkably smooth. Operators mastered the basic controls quickly, and the system has remained stable without major bugs or freezes. “We are confident that choosing KarismaCG was the right decision,” says Mr. Hasegawa. The team is also highly satisfied with the 2D editing capabilities, such as the expressive power of edges and embossing, which result in clean and high-quality graphics. Furthermore, the real-time 3D editing is so responsive and engaging that they sometimes find themselves using it more than necessary.
The team also expressed high trust in the developer, VRi, noting their dominant market share and high technical expertise observed during a visit to Korean broadcasters. The visit was an excellent opportunity to meet the VRi team, who proved to be cheerful, friendly, and highly skilled, reinforcing the belief that they are a partner ABC can rely on for a long-term relationship.
Future Outlook
ABC plans to further explore KarismaCG’s 3D and animation features to create more engaging content, with plans to test new creative approaches in upcoming special programs. Furthermore, we intend to explore the potential applications of KarismaCG in areas beyond post-production.
